Energy Now > Dissipation and Efficiency > Student Ideas

Students may confuse dissipation and disappearance. The word disappearance is a good one to avoid. For some people or contexts it means removal from sight, while in other cases it is used to suggest a ceasing to exist. Dissipation has no such ambiguity. It is a spread of energy into wider surroundings. It is certainly not the end of the energy, just the end of its availability for useful transfer.
